The Naturally Curly Girl's Guide to "Stick" Straight Hair

Since I no longer have a relaxer, I like to alternate between curly or straight hair. I love having this option. This past Friday night I played "Beauty Shop" in my quaint little apartment. I laid out all of the hair products I planned on using along with my blow dryer and Superstar Megastar Silver Nano Flat Iron (from Misikko- which works like a charm!) and went to work. For natural honeys who want "straighter than straight" hair or even permed honeys who want to extend the life of their last relaxer, follow my step-by-step guide to BETTER than salon-perfect straight hair! After I was done with my hair I was beyond ecstatic, I couldn't believe how incredibly beautiful my hair looked. I must say, I was really feelin' myself ;) thanks to Mizani.

*Please note- I used the complete Thermasmooth system from Mizani. While searching for this line of products I found that Mizani is not sold in most beauty supply stores. (Editor's note: Mizani is available in salons only, to locate a Mizani salon call 877-726-3624 or visit www.mizani-usa.com).

Step 1: I washed my hair and conditioned with the Thermasmooth Shampoo and Conditioner. This is the first step of the system which will protect and smooth the hair. I had a little difficulty combing through the conditioner- it was very tedious. My hair is extremely curly so this step may be a bit easier for those with relaxed hair.

Step 2: I applied the Thermasmooth Smooth Guard Smoothing Serum (tongue-twister, I know!). I applied the serum in sections, and blow dried each section until complete. Surprisingly, this serum was actually moisturizing and non-greasy. Most serums I've tried in the past were extremely greasy and sticky. I only used about a dime sized amount for each section. I noticed while blow drying that my hair was becoming very straight, straighter than when I normally blow dry it.

Step 3: I started at the bottom and worked my way up, by parting and clipping. For each section, I sprayed a little of the Thermasmooth Shine Extend Anti-Humidity Spritz. This spritz is to be used prior to thermal styling and locks in shine while lightly shielding the hair from humidity. This is also non-sticky and has a very light coconut scent that I enjoyed.
After spritzing the hair, I began straightening by using my Superstar Megastar Silver Nano 1" Flat Iron. This was my first time using the flat iron in this capacity. I was extremely pleased with the results. My main problem with blow drying and flat ironing my hair in the past was that I was left with fuzz balls at the ends (regardless of trims!). No matter how many times I ran the flat iron over these kinks at the ends, I couldn't get rid of them. The Megastar was like butter! It glided through my hair and I did NOT have to run over the ends a hundred times.

The end result was better than any wash & set at a salon, and probably much healthier (No burning the scalp and pulling/stretching from the blow dryer). The Megastar Flat Iron is ceramic tourmaline which produces gentle infrared heat and ionic technology while also eliminating harmful bacteria from the appliance (Misikko carries an abundance of ceramic flat irons and hair dryers, click here).

I finished up by working a drop of the Mizani Spradiance High Gloss Serum (which also has a nice subtle scent) through my hair, focusing on the ends.

Now If only I could clip my own ends :( !!!

Honeys, I hope you find this technique as helpful and successful as I have! Let me know if you've tried this technique and/or are willing to give it a go! You will NOT be disappointed.

This technique gets five honey drops from me:

This technique sounds simple enough. Usually when I'm home and don't want to spend a day in a Salon I'll attempt to set my hair (it's hard but I do my best) so it can dry healthier and then I take rollers out and go to work w. my Sedu Flat Iron (since I don't set hair well I'm always left w. lots of curly lumps to straighten - UGH).

My question for you is, when you blow-dried did you blow dry it straight? Or just enough to be able to flatiron???

THX for post!!!

Thanks for sharing, I have issues with the kinks still on the bottom as well and figured it was a need for a better flat iron. Have to think on that investment however that's pretty serious!

Your hair is beautiful! I will have to try this technique. I typically have to use a hot comb first to straighten my hair some more after blow drying. Like you, when I got straight from blow drying to flat iron, I tend to still have a little frizz/fuzz, especially the ends. I usually take it as my ends being split/raggedy. Glad to know that I don't have to keep clipping them! With these products, it looks like I will be able to eliminate that step! Thanks for the tips!

Hi, this is my first time coming to your blog, and I am impressed! I know this is late, but do you know what temperatures you used for your hair dryer and flat iron? Im curious to know how high you can go with out sustaining heat damage. I also have natural hair. Thanks!

Wes said...

@ Anonymous: I never really pay attention to the temp levels (I probably should!) I usually like the iron as hot as it can get- That way I don't have to go over the same section too many times.
