I loved my relaxed, straight hair the most during my early college years. That is, until Kelis stepped on the scene. I immediately fell in love with her funkiness, colorful curls and that "I Hate You So Much" attitude. A true trendsetter in every sense of the word. Back in those days, the early 00's, I had no idea that my natural hair was curly and I would always do a "braid out" or "two strand twist" style in order to try and emulate Kelis' curls that I wanted sooooooo bad. To this very day, I still haven't reached that Kelis "level of perfection" curl but I'm very close! I think it's all in the cut honestly.
Below is my favorite style video ("Caught Out There")- I love the colors, her style and I also dug the creative spin on the typical "two braid cornrows" (you'll see it at exactly 2:57)- which is still a rainy summer day favorite for me.
Vintage "curly" Kelis will always be my favorite style icon, who's yours?

I love love love Kelis-still do. She needs to come out with something already.
@ DE: Do you have her "Wanderland" album? It was her 2nd studio album and it wasn't released here in the states. If you don't have it, it'll definitely hold you over till she comes back, that album is one of my favorites.
Ive always loved Kelis's natural look. my hair is not naturally curly, but if it was i would definitely try to achieve her look
My vintage curly is Cree Summer...'member her from A Different World? It's a shame that we have been relaxing for so long that most of us do not know what our texture is really like. tsk,tsk,tsk...
Love, love, love Kelis. I have all her albums including Wanderland, which I think is a shame it didn't get released stateside. I love her curly hair too, although I think she's rocking the ish out of her short crop now.
Other style icons for me would be Jack Davey of J*DaVeY (the mohawk!) and Betty Davis (teased, ginormous fro, wild outfits). I can't think of more right now but they've definitely been inspiring me lately.
@ Jack: So sorry- I deleted your comment by accident! I know you had asked for pointers regarding the 2 cornrow braids. One of the most helpful tips in braiding (atleast for me) is using 2 mirrors (one in the front and one for the back) & also using a rat-tail comb.
Don't forget to tie it down afterwards!! This'll keep it neat.
I LOVE Kelis too! I have her first album b/c I just loved her uniqueness. I don't have WanderLand though...HMMM i'll have to check it out!
As for the 'two braid cornrows' that is a lovely hair style...wish I knew how to braid my hair like that :/
I haven't relaxed since last August and I'm doing okay...I think I'll keep growing out the new growth...if I can get straight hair w. a flat iron why relax? :)
I love Tracee Ellis Ross her hair looks so nice...
I miss the old Kelis. The record company would not let her be. Rihanna has gone so far biting off her style.
She had lovely hair!
...and then j*davey bit kelis' style and beats then fronted it as new.
take a look a kelis young fresh and new video and tell me j*davey ain't copying.
