Simple & Easy Blow Drying

This is for Ms. Bougieadventures and anyone else who might have trouble blow drying/straightening. I am by no means a blow drying connoisseur, I do what works for me. Its the simple of the simplest ways of drying my hair easily and effectively. I've done it the same way since I was in college, but this time around I've got much better appliances to work with!

To start:

1. I always begin at the back (near the nape of the neck), by using a rattail comb to part a section (from mid-ear to mid-ear) and clip remaining hair (A great clip to use would be the T-Rex clips, from beautychoice.com- They're completely snag proof!). Depending on how much time I have, I'll either split that bottom section in half or just blow dry the whole section.

2. I blow dry using the comb attachment to dry the section until it is thoroughly dry. I don't focus to much on the roots because I always follow that up with the flat iron.
*Always be sure to use some kind of heat protectant prior to any heat styling.

3. I continue working in sections, from the back up to the top of my head.

4. Once I'm done blow drying, I immediately begin to flat iron starting from the back. I use the rattail comb to part a smaller section, usually about from earlobe to earlobe. From that section, I use my fingers to section off a smaller section (about 1 1/2" wide) and flat iron. I run the flat iron from the roots to mid-length, stop and then continue through to the ends.

5. I repeat this process, working from the back up. When I first started doing my hair this way it would take me about 2 hours to blow dry and flat iron. But with time and much practice, I've gotten much quicker.
*Note: Don't focus too much on being "fast" because you will burn yourself, trust me I've done it ;-)

This is the easiest and quickest way for me to straighten my hair. I don't usually roller set because I suck at it and it takes me FOR.EVER.

So, tell me- How do you style your hair?

I notice you didnt mention a roundbrush to blow-dry. I wish I had learned my lesson sooner from using it and a flat iron. It was more manipulation than my poor hair could take.

Nice post...thx so much...it's helpful. I too suck at roller setting...I've tried it many times at home and it is really hard.
I have a blowdryer but it has a weird shape so it isn't standard enough for me to get a comb attachment...can you tell me which blow dryer you use?

I'd like to try this technique. I typically just go to Dominican Salons get roller set and a little blow dry...but I waste so much time waiting that I'm fed up...so time to do it at home.

I use to rollerset (and got good at it), but I have a soft bonnet dryer & it took too long so until I buy a professional dryer I am using a hand held dryer that has 3 attachments, a brush, a narrow tooth comb and medium tooth comb. I usually use the narrow tooth comb.

I do as you, and section my hair from the back up, but I keep my dryer on 'low' as to not burn my hair b/c I'm a relaxed honey lol. And I flat iron it but that is set to a 7/8 so tht's low also.

It's faster than sitting under the dryer and my hair still has the same bounce.

Your hair must be perfect! Love these tips. I usually proceed from front to back but this makes a lot more sense . . .

Thank you, this is really helpful! What type of heat protectant did you use?

@ Bonafide Latina: I have a CHI blowdryer that I use right now, but b/4 that I used to have a regular ol' Conair, which wasn't bad.

@Jojolove: Good question, I'll answer that in an upcoming post, stay tuned!

I still my short curly afro by:

1. Washing with Moisturizing conditioner.
2. Using Hair Mayonnaise for Deep Conditioning.
3. Towel Blot. Use liberal amount of Shea Butter.
4. Then I double strand twist and let air dry.

I always get compliments on my hair.
