Thin Line between Love & Hate: The Gym!

Last week officially marked my return to the gym. I'd been M.I.A since August 20th (to be exact) and my return was looooong overdue. I don't know why it's such a struggle for me! I hate (yes: hate) going but once I'm there I'm proud to have made it (getting there is half the battle). After a really good workout I feel even prouder of myself. So, why is it so hard for me to drag myself there after a long day at work? Usually because I'm tired and just want to go home. I've tried going on my lunch break (which I don't like because I feel like I'm rushing my workout), still haven't done the early morning thing (there have been numerous attempts, trust me). I didn't even go Monday OR yesterday. It's an everyday struggle (Biggie said it best ;-)

But with my new regime, I plan on doing things a little differently (just a little). My aim is to get in the gym everyday for at least an hour and a half. Like I said, getting there is half the battle, once I'm in- I'm good to go. I've decided that I also want to have fun with it. If you're like me and you find yourself fighting with your daily exercise routine, be creative! Instead of hitting the treadmill and/or weights with focused dead-set determination, take one day out of the week for a class: (*If you live in or near NYC, feel free to check 'em out)
-Alvin Ailey Dance Extension Program: For just $16 per class you can experience Afro-Cuban, ballet, hip hop, even Capoeira dance rhythms.

-New Dance Group: Try a belly dance, salsa or tap class for only $15 per class.

-Exotic Dance Central: To mix things up even more, try a one hour intro to pole dancing for $25.

If you're nervous about dancing don't worry! All of the above schools offer basic beginner classes.

It seems like everyone I know is blindly in love with the gym- I can't be the only one who has this love/hate thing going on!!
Question: Do you really love the gym or do you just love it because you know it's something you need to do?

I fell the same way, it's just so hard to motivate myself to go. Good when I'm there but making the move hurts.

Ugh I have same issue Wes. ;/
It's tough for me to get in the zone and go on my own...I haven't gone in 2 weeks but before that it had been months as well.

I'm hoping to instill some type of routine...and I agree the classes are more fun for me...I get bored easily so machines alone are not enough.

Let us know how you do!

Funny that you blog this today. I have been on a long haitus from the gym and the extra 15 pounds I am carrying is the evidence. I actually stopped by yesterday just to check out the current prices but I too have a love hate relationship. Love the results. Hate the trip. Conflicted about how to get it higher up on my list of things to do.

My relationship with the gym is EXACTLY like yours. Getting there is the problem...but once I'm there I'm straight. My thing is motivation...if I'm paying for a membership or class I'm there because I don't want to waste my money. I also prefer to go with someone or take a class.

I'm actually planning on joining SOME gym or fitness class soon. My job actually offers classes, I just have to get the motivation to go...

*sigh* lol

I never go to the gym, which is definitely a problem. I've been thinking about taking some dance classes though! Great post!!

The Alvin Ailey Dance class seems amazing. Ahhh the gym, it is my space to just clear my head. I do know what you mean now that it is getting cold outside I am ready to pop in some workout DVD's but once I am at the gym I am in.

i was a regular goer earlier this year but now that's pretty much been relegated to Spin classes a few times a week. Thankfully, there's exercise DVDs and other things at home to supplement it. and i'm an early morning chick. evenings just don't cut it for me.

i like gym more for the sake of the progress you see from it once you're consistent. in a sense, that's what keeps me going even when i wanna call it quits.

I hate it, not just the gym working out period but I'm the same in terms of it being the starting that's the issue. I brought an exercise ball and it's so so easy to use yet I have not touched it since the summer. I'd brought it so that I could do my sit ups, hoping it would avoid the pain I experience when working out on the floor. Figured I'd get that instead of a mat just in case it works a bit better.

It does and yet I still don't use it!!!

Broke down and joined the gym the money spent will be the motivator to stay consistent as it has in the past.

I love, love, love, love the gym. You forgot to add Djoniba Drum and Dance in NYC. They have a ton of great dance classes. Check them out!
