I know I'm extremely late catching this bus but I recently bought myself a jar of 100% organic extra virgin coconut oil and I love it! I've mostly been using it as a moisturizer for my face and body and don't plan on buying lotion again. I love the aroma of coconuts and for those of you who might not, the scent goes away. So, no- you won't end up smelling like a coconut all day!I've also been using the coconut oil in my hair. It works well as a natural moisturizer and provides great sheen. The best thing about the coconut oil is that its non-greasy and absorbs quickly. I plan on using it as a part of my deep conditioning treatment- I'll add about a teaspoonful to about a palm-ful of conditioner. Lately, I've been experimenting with a new condish (thanks to Joi @ Anti-Hairslave for the recommendation!) called Universal Una Bomba. It's a dominican product that actually does nourish dry and damaged hair. The small jar goes for about $3.99 and the large jar is about $7.99. I first tried the small jar, and I just purchased the large one about a week ago. It has a funny smell, but it works.
If you use coconut oil in any capacity, please add a tip below!

i've been meaning to get on this coconut oil train too...i've heard that if you put it in your hair and then wrap a warm wet towel in there it also increases its potency
I've been using coconut oil in my hair for a minute - I remember emailing you waayyy back when about it. : )
I love how it makes my hair silky smooth. I seal my ends nightly with it and use it with my deep condish. Recently I've started using it in place of lotion as well.
I'm a fan!!!
Glad you are on the boat Wes, lol! Yes I love coconut oil too. It is great in my hair. I also use it on my son's heads for added nourishment.
The BOMB condish is the BOMB! I use it as a deep condish and add a little EVOO and/or coconut oil. It works well.
Love the(organic raw)coconut oil...before i use it I seperate 1/2 for hair and 1/2 for cooking... use it like any veg. oil or EVOO. I get it in however I can! I love the faint taste it gives to food.
I use coconut oil in my hair all year round. I drench my hair in it after washing and for twisting. It's also light enough to apply to my scalp. As a bonus my SO loves the scent.
I love coconut oil! I've been using it to seal my ends however, I'm now using it to also moisturize my skin. I love this product. I keep a jar in the kitchen and a jar in the bathroom.
Love your blog!
I use coconut oil on my scalp and hair. I place it in a little spray bottle to help me apply it evenly.
You know about my addiction to coconut oil. lol, glad you're on the bandwagon now.
I've tried Coconut Oil on my hair but I don't know if I am getting the wrong kind b/c when i put it on my scalp it makes my hair very greasy and I can't do much with it :(
What brand did you get and where did you get it from if you dont mind me asking?
As for La Bomba...I've used a lot of Dominican conditioners but stopped b/c they didn't have the good ingredients...if you are using La Bomba I'm guessing it doesn't have the bad ingredients lol...I'll check it out :)
I use coconut oil the ends of my hair immediately after I wash my hair. And a week before I relax my hair I use coconut oil on my scalp.
I haven't tried it on my skin, I'll have to try it.
Welcome aboard! Coconut oil is the best!
I use coconut oil after i wash my hair. I part my hair and oil my scalp then add some more throughout my hair. What helps the most is putting a dime size or smaller amount of Jamaican Black Castor Oil on the ends of my hair while its wet. This really helps keep my ends moisturized.
I also started using coconut oil thanks to Joi @Anti-Hairslave. I use it on a daily basis when my hair is curly (I distribute a small amount evenly from scalp to ends on damp hair) and every two days or so if it's straight (as a polish to smooth out the frizz). A little goes a long way. My hair is softer, smoother and shinier. This weekend I used it as a lotion and I really liked the results.
Coconut oil is amaziiiing! I use it for the hair and body. Isn't it great?
I used coconut il on my hair when i was younger and im going to start doing it again. Im also planning on buying some jamacian castor oil too.
I've used coconut oil in the past, I'm not sure why I haven't gone out and purchased more..but I'm hoping to find some at the Afrikan store today since I'll be pickin up some shea butter. :)
Your blog rocks, coconut oil is amazing, i bought it about 2 weeks ago for my hair for the first time, and i love it. The guy who i bought it from was quite shocked like u havent used it? i was like no, i just read its great for black hair and he was like when i was growing up in africa thats all we had so we used it for everything lol bless his heart.
I love coconut oil with Elasta DPR-11 and honey for my DC. Talk about moisture moisture moisture lasting for about a week.
Love the blog!
I've used coconut oil and love it!!
I love coconut oil for my skin and hair. In the summer I don't need to use anything else on my skin-it leaves my skin super soft-
I love La bomba rinse and use it as a co-washing conditioner. It leaves my hair soft. I wish it had a better smell to it tho but I still like it nonetheless.
I've used virgin coconut oil on my hair for deep conditioning. It also makes an excellent pre-workout energy drink. Simply mix a tablespoon of virgin coconut oil into a glass of hot water. It'll melt and then you drink it. The medium chain triglycerides provide an instant source of energy!
You can use coconut oil mixed with olive oil by warming it and applying it to your scalp the night before a wash. It promotes growth and conditions.
See! I'm so glad you like it! Thanks for the link love too!
I may try this. I have thinning, but wiry, frizzy hair. I need an oil based product for the ends and to keep the frizz away.
Hello Wes! "...I've mostly been using it as a moisturizer for my face and body and don't plan on buying lotion again. I love the aroma of coconuts and for those of you who might not, the scent goes away..."
Sounds just like me, if I may say so. ;-) Pure virgin coconut oil can and will outperform even the most expensive skin and hair care products out there, especially in the long run.
Yes, using coconut oil topically won't make you smell like a fresh coconut all day. But you know what? I know of some people who love the scent and taste of coconuts, like we do, that they use coconut oil regularly for their popcorn and they say, it makes their living room smell like a movie theater. How about that! :-)
Take care.
Cheers,
CoconutOilGuy

First time to your blog...came here from CurlyChronicles' channel.
I too have been using coconut oil for a minute...actually it's been about 7 years or so. I've used it in DCs, mixed with leave-ins, and just on its own and my "classic nappy" hair loves it. People kill me though with their disbelief. I'm like, "Yes, I mean REAL coconut oil...the stuff folks cook with!" lol
I happen to have a bottle of Vatika brand oil which uses coconut oil as its base. My hair's like, "Nuh-uh...give me the real deal."
Ladies, we've come full circle! I'm from the Caribbean and coconut oil is what my great grandparents cooked with and used to moisturize their skin and hair. I remember my great grandmother grating piles of fresh nuts and then boiling it all down to extract her own oil, and I recall the wonderful smell that would envelop the entire house.
But then the commercial stuff entered the picture, and coconut oil was first relegated to second class status, then abandoned. The next generation or two went all out for the shiny foreign plastic containers with the long list of unpronounceable ingredients. The hot comb gave way to the chemical relaxer. Synthetic ruled.
We've come a long way, honeys. We're beginning to appreciate the value of what we've always had: coconut oil, olive oil, shea butter. We're loving our natural hair. This is true emancipation!
Signed: Natural since 2001 and just beginning to learn how to manage my frizzy curls!
I've been using coconut oil on my hair for almost a year or so since transitioning out a relaxer over one year ago. All I can say is SOFT, SHEEN, HEALTHY, and STRONG. It is amazing how God has given us every thing we need and most of it is made from the ground, a tree, etc. As I am typing, my face has coconut oil on it (I use Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil. You're right: the smell doesn't stay. I seal my ends with it at night and rub a tinch through my hair, and my hair is NOT greasy at all the next day. God bless you.
