Cold Weather? Try a Braid

When all else fails, the braid ALWAYS works. Nearing the end of last week (well, Friday to be exact), it had gotten really cold here in NYC. Too cold NOT to wear a hat. A dilemma I always have with curly hair is wearing a hat! Hats will crush my curls and make it look flat (usually I'll throw my hood on, but it was just too cold for that). So, since it was a Friday, it was cold, I was tired and my WavyCoil was four days old I decided to go for the braid. A simple, low braid with a side (or sometimes middle) part would suffice. And it did:I used aloe vera gel to help tame flyaways and keep the puffballs at my temples at bay. A small finger-ful of coconut oil helped to keep my ends moisturized and full of sheen. With this style I was able to throw on my hat and stay warm!

Your braid is extra shiny and nice, I am currently rocking box braids for the next month. NYC winters can be brutal, today being one of them(19 degrees but it feels like 5!). I have my knit hat on and my hair is at bay...By the way I mix castor oil with my coconut oil and add it my scalp, this keeps my scalp moisturized and warm...

Cute style! And yes, it's so cold here in NYC and it's only going to get colder in the next couple of days.

i love how you use coconut oil and aloe vera as your main styling products...where'd u get your aloe vera from?

Love it! OOoooh I tried your wavy coil technique this week! It was my first time and although I did like it a lot it created shrinkage but I probably didn't do it right but I really liked now that allows your ends to look sooo good ... will try it again :)

Yes Id like to know where you got your aloe vera from. As for the coconut oil mine goes from hard to liquid but since I have so much heat (hood heat lol) in my apt it is liquid which is ok but sometimes I wish it was more pasty form b/c that's easier to spread in hair...

anyhoo love the braid.

Love it! But what I want to know is...what hat did you rock with that cute ponytail?? Maybe a cute newsboy hat...

@Ren ren: I don't know if you have the chain in ATL but I got the Aloe Vera gel at the Vitamin Shoppe (I think you can also order it online)

@BonafideLatina: I'm glad you tried it and liked it! How big did you make your twists? Maybe if you make them smaller your hair might stretch more.

@Skylark826: I had on a regular knit hat- I have to cover my ears in this frigid weather!

I got off the R train this morning and I thought my tear ducts would freeze...NY is colder than cold today!

I found the same aloe vera gel at Whole Foods Supemarket. I used some today to slick back my ponytail. Do you apply it again throughout the day to smooth the front?

Thank you!! My bf thought I was crazy when I said I don't wear hats because of my hair lol. My hair isn't quie long enough for a braid like that, but its nice to know I am not the only one with aversion to hats lol.

I'm gonna have to try this. On another note, i'm actually jealous of the cold weather. it's been super hot here in Cali.

I put my hair in a braid like that when it's cold outside, really does protct the hair. It's always cold in London : (

@ Danielle: I hear ya, I have a braid again today- It's 18 degrees and snowing here :-(

This is definitely a cute look, but I don't think my hair would like nice like that because it's relaxed.

@ Brown Girl Gumbo: I do this style w/ straight hair too!

This is so simple and chic. I need to grow about two more feet of hair before this is possible...right now, hats aren't really an option...
