Happy Inauguration day honeys! I was supposed to be in DC but things didn't quite work out as such! Any-who, today's trouble involves hair, transitioning and "silkeners":Dear HBS,
I'm growing my perm out right now, and I was thinking of taking the easy way out and getting a silkener (curly perm). Do you recommend it? I'm starting college and I want something easy to manage. It will be humidity resistant and I can get it wet; which are things I can't do with my hair in this transitional state. What do you think?

Understand that a silkener is a perm. If that's what you want, then fine, but understand that your hair is not natural if you get one. It will still be dependent on chemicals to achieve the result. I personally would say, grow a little more and see your actual texture first. BTW, I'm relaxer-free and not afraid of rain!
Wes, sorry you didn't make it...
ahh too bad you couldnt make it, i'll be watching on tv too!
Sorry you missed the day in DC..
Awe you didnt make it? It's still historic if you watch it on tv.
At least thats what I tell myself.
No Silkener!
I dont think in the end that that will be easy to maintain.
I understand that transitioning is difficult. I'm in week 6 now. LOL
But a silkener will be another chemical.
Don't do it. Ive been relaxer/ texturizer free for almost 4 years. The transition can be tough but it will just set you back if your ultimate goal is to not have straightening chemicals in your hair.
Don't be afraid of water. If you get it wet just throw some leave in conditioner in it and it will start to do what you want it to. I never found a cure for the frizzies but most people say its all about moisture. I love coconut oil now and its really good for your hair so try spraying it down with a 80%/20% coconut oil/water mixture. It might help. Your hair is beautiful. Keep up the naturalness.
Your hair texture is very similar to mine and I have about 2 inches of new growth. I hope you make it natural all the way because I am learning from you (in how to take care of my hair during the transition). Good luck with your process!
Hey Curly,
I agree w/the others...If your ultimate goal is to go natural, a silkener is only going to set you back. It's a chemical. You need to figure out if you're truly ready to make this commitment. If you are, plunge right in by reading all there is to read and arming yourself w/products that are friendly to your hair type. But be honest w/yourself, otherwise you'll end up on a roller coaster of frustration and hasty mishaps.
It's not gonna be an easy start...You'll be getting to know your hair for real, for real! Just be patient and remember it's all about trial and error until you figure things out. But, if you get the silkerner before you get to truly understand what your hair needs, you'll never know. Also, it never hurts to stock up on pretty headbands, clips, etc. to help you get through those days when you're most frustrated.
Good luck!! And keep us posted.
