I had to put a hold on the usual Tuesday's Trouble post (it'll be up this afternoon) because I just couldn't wait to tell you guys that I henna'd my hair over the weekend!! It took me awhile to come to the decision to try it but Friday night I had made up my mind. Saturday morning, I took a trip down to 28th street and picked up the Jamila brand Henna (For $1.99 per 100 grams- I bought 200gm or 2 boxes rather). Since it was such a lovely day I then walked up to 59th street- stopping in Starbucks and Sephora along the way..
Any-who, that evening I created my Henna paste using warm green tea and honey. I applied the mixure and slept in it (I followed Curly Nikki's tutorial video word for word). In the morning, I rinsed, co-washed, deep conditioned and styled. It was a long drawn out procedure, but next time (oh, there will definitely be a next time) won't be so long and drawn out..
The application wasn't that messy for me. I had on plastic gloves and had covered my bathroom floor with cut up brown paper bags (I didn't have newspaper!). I worked in sections, using my hands to mush the gooky stuff in. I was very careful, so it didn't fly all over the place.

Many complain about the henna being too heavy on their head. However, it reminded me of the weight of a relaxer- If you've ever relaxed your hair, its similar to that bulky feeling (maybe a teeny bit heavier, but not unbearable)..
I was very pleased with the color- I love my dark hair and I noticed deep red hues on some of my ends. The henna sort of emphasized my already-dark hair by giving it a more richer appeal.

Frizz Reduction??
.I noticed that the frizz factor had decreased significantly. I would say it was a good 40% reduction (and it was cloudy, foggy and misty all day yesterday), my hair held up pretty well for such dreary weather. It wasn't until after work when I went to the gym that it got a little out of control. Once I got home, I grabbed my new favorite toy ~Pantene's Relaxed & Natural conditioner~ squeezed a dollop into a bowl, and using about a pea-sized amount on my finger, I ran over the frizzy spots, curl by curl. It worked like magic (Actually, the above pics were taken after the PR&N was applied!)
So... It took me awhile to take the leap, but I did it and have found love in the form of a grassy, fresh mowed lawn smelling powder :-)
.
If you've tried henna- Tell me more!

Go head and get your henna on, lol. Very nice shine. I'm a henna head and I henna'd on Friday too. I usually use CN's instructions word for word but this time I used 100g of henna and 50g of amla. I'm addicted. I've been on the henna train since January and I have no plans of hopping off.
I have a question. Is henna just for natural honeys or can relaxed honeys use it also?
I love the shine and the way your curls look....I notice the difference!
@ Anon...what is Amla?
Chugga-chugga Chugga-chugga Choo Choo! All aboard the henna train! Your hair looks fabulous (before and after the henna)!
Ohhhk. Where on 28th street did you purchase the Jamila?!?! I'm in the city almost everyday and I go to school in that area. I was gonna order it online but if it's available near me then I may as well take a walk. Also, how many grams did you buy and how much did you pay for it?
Your hair looks great!!! I definitely notice a reduction in frizz.
Oh man! Your hair looks so shiny and healthy! I can't wait to try it now, though I'm still scared of my hair turning into a firetruck! What did you use to protect your hairline from color?
looks great on you! your hair looks shinier too :) my friend's mom get's the henna on her hair at an indian salon (it's her alternative to dying her hair...and it masks the grays)
I'm glad you decided to do it. Now I feel like trying it out. Like you, I am concerned with the henna changing my hair color. Unlike you, I dyed my hair a couple of years ago to a color that matched my natural hair to get rid of an older dye job and fear that the henna might make the ends red. But I would love to give henna a try so I can and end up with shiny, big hair have less frizz.
Hey Wes,
I saw you yesterday in the misty grim weather and was surprised you didn't have your hood on...lol But yes I’d like to tell you again your hair look WONDERFUL and bigger then usual (clap your hands for the big haired girls. The pictures in your post do your hair no difference!!! I saw a definite change in the shine and body of your hair... Keep it up
I'm definitely next!! Two weeks post my relaxer...lol

Looks great Wes! Did you twist-n-curl your hair here? If so, do you twist all the way to the ends?
Awesome results! Henna and Amla are both amazing. You'll be very happy with is new addition.
Oh YAY! I'm still going back and forth over henna-ing. I don't know why I'm being all scared... I guess I'm afraid of getting more color than I want (I love my dark hair!). But I guess there are ways around that... so I need to stop being a scaredy cat and just go for it.
@ FlowerChild: There are a DOZEN indian shops on Lexington near 28th, I don't know the name of the one I went into, but most of them in that area should have it. Kalustyan's is also good too (on Lexington btwn 28th and 29th)
@ D Alexandra: I didn't use anything to protect my hairline. I just wiped up an excess henna using a damp paper towel
@ Anonymous: Yes, I did Nikki's twist & curl, and twisted all the way down to the ends.
This makes me want to try henna all the more. You hair looks beautiful. Quick question-you said that it wasn't that messy for you. What about while you were sleeping? Did it stain pillows/sheets, etc.? And yes, I know you probably put on a plastic cap/bag while sleeping, but some could have slip out. Did it? And how did it dry? Hard like bentonite clay, or still somewhat wet/damp?
Your hair look absolutely georgous!!! I'll be on board the henna train next.
WOW, your looks great!!! I actually did my 1st Henna (Cassia/Neutral) on Saturday also. I'm not ready for the color just yet. But I did enjoy the results, however, I had the hardest time rinsing all of the grit out. I co washed and rinsed about 3 times. I also did the deep condition. There was definitely shine, less shrinkage(my main concern) and less frizz. It even seems stronger already.I mixed mine with boiling water, EVOO and honey (Nikki's recipe for Cassia).
I am definitely doing it again this weekend.
What brand of conditioner did you use for your cowash?
OMG this is killing me! I'm so anxious to henna my hair! I hope it gets here by thursday! stop teasing me!!
Wes your hair is hawt! I love the shine, and the fullness is fierce! I am going to do some more research and upon my return from Vacation I am going to get off the fence and on the henna train!! lol
I love your hair, great post! Question: Did you DC w/heat?
@ SA: I slept with a clear plastic cap on my head, then covered w/ a terry cloth turban (I got it from the beauty supply store for about $2). Then, just to be extra careful, I placed a towel over my pillow. Nothing came out- My towel was just as clean as when I laid down on it!
@ SFergie: I used Herbal Essences Hello Hydration for my co-wash, and for my deep condition I used Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose along w/ Elasta QP's DPR-11 (50/50)
@ Jay: Since I didn't go anywhere on Sunday, I pretty much deep conditioned all day (from about 10am to 4pm), I did use heat in the beginning for about 45 minutes, not long.
FIRST Henna on Saturday! I really like it. I live in the (deep) South and the humidity wrecks my hair. Products have disappointed me so many times, that I adopted a more natural routine of weekly twistouts with unrefined shea butter and aloe vera gel. My hair is as soft today (Wednesday) as it was on Monday despite several outdoor workouts near lakes and severe early morning fog.
I did my first henna Monday and will be doing it weekly!! I found my JamiIia for $2.99. I wrote an entry on my experience too! It is a lengthy process but well worth it. Your hair looks great ;)
YAY!!!!!!! You're result's look awesome! I need to take the plunge on the Henna BW (Band Wagon) and stop FAKING! LOL. Good job girlie.

NIIIICe congrats WES this something I'll do when it starts to get warmer and I wear my hair curly more :)
Thanks for the review!!!
Thanks so much for the info Wes! It couldn't have come at a better time as my sister left for NYC the day after this post. She was able to get me some of the Jamila henna from 28th st. It was sooo much cheaper than online. Thanks again!

So... I used henna for the first time today. I followed curly nikki's tutorial. I used a foil bag of Rajasthani henna at a local Indian grocer. I have transitioning 4a shoulder length hair, about half n half. I would recommend using the entire bag 200g if anyone else is rockin this much of a cotton ball. Needless to say the application process proved difficult to spread the mix. So far the results are nice even before washout. The curl pattern looks nice. P.S gloves are a must!
