Next Day Frustrations!

I still haven't mastered the art of sleeping just yet. You guys saw how my hair looked on Monday night (after the gym at that!), it was splendid! But ~unfortunately~ I had to go to sleep. As much as I loooooove to sleep, when it comes to my hair and salvaging a twist & curl (Nikki needs to trademark this ;-), sleep is my #1 E N E M Y.

Why, you ask? Well, because my curls get smashed in the front and the back tends to frizz for some odd reason. Take a look:

Trust me- These pics actually make it look better than what it really is. I've got to find a way to preserve this style! I'm taking suggestions- Got any?

I would love to hear any responses to this. I go through the same exact thing every single night. I wake up with "smooshed", flat, hair that needs to be washed all over again...ugh!!

@ Akinat: YESSSS! I had to wash my hair again last night :-/

Well, let's see. I used to have that problem when I slept on a cotton pillowcase or when it was too hot in my room while I slept. But once I took care of those two issues all was "almost" well with my hair. The final step and curl saver extraordinaire was to put my hair into a high and very loose ponytail - That way I was really only sleeping on my face not all over my hair :) Have you tried that?

When mine was long, I never was able to keep mine looking great for 2 days. That next day had to be a cute pony tail or something..

@ Shay: When I do a wash & go I usually sleep in a high, very loose ponytail. I don't have a satin pillowcase though, that may be my drawback. In the pics above, I had slept in a bonnet and that was it.

my hair is about ear length curled up, so i don't really have too many options for it. at night, i re-twist, that's the only way i manage to save my hair. day 1, i put the curlers in to make my hair super tight. day two, i retwist w/ no product in about 1/2 the twists i used to make the original style. day 3, i retwist and use curlers, but bigger and looser than day 1, and seal the ends. retwisting is the only way i can get any type of 2nd day hair.

Wes, what products are you using? The second pic looks like it loosened b/c there was not enough 'hold' in the product/s. Anywho, I still thiink you can work this twist out by sweeping the sides up and clipping them. Can you tell I'm lazy, lol.

I had this issue too...but not anymore..here's why. I purchased a satin bonnet that ties in the back. It looks like your regular bonnet, but the top opens up and all your curls can fit inside & it doesn't smoosh them. You can tie it tight or loose, depending upon how big your hair is at the moment. I've found that this bonnet is great..esp when I have my hair twisted w/rollers at the end or T-n-C's. Also, I have a satin pillow case as well. It cost me about 7 bucks from Sally's BSS and the bonnet was no more than 3 bucks.

You could also try re-twisting your hair at night all over..maybe in like 10 twists or so..then release in the morning. I've tried this a few times and it's worked.

at night, i section my hair into a/b 6 - 8 sections and loosely twist them. i do not twist all the way to the end. then i tie a scarf on my head and go to sleep. in the morning i gently untwist, shake, fluff and style.

prettysunshyne..I love the suggestion for the satin bonnet that ties in the back. I tried the regular satin bonnet and needless to say that will not make a second appearance in the bedroom ;o).

The only solution I've found is re-twisting (braiding for me) the sections that tend to loose curl overnight. I don't like doing it because I try to manipulate my hair as little as possible, but nothing else has worked. The satin scarves "smoosh" the hair too much. And while sleeping on a satin pillowcase doesn't leave the hair smooshed, I always end up with unruly hair on the side that I slept on.

Pin the curs up loosely at night with bobby pins. Satin pillow or bonnet or wrap is up to you. But just take bobby pins pull the hair back loosely to the top of your head and pin it. Then shake it out in the morning.

i've actually found that flat twists at night are much quicker and look better the next day than individual twists

Have you tried sleeping with it out. I sleep on my side, on a satin pillow case, and pull my hair up and over the top of the pillow so that I'm not laying on it. This is working even better than the bonnet! I know its frustrating to have to re-do often...the twist-n-curl takes me about 45 minutes to do, but it lasts most of the week. Also, I find that if I henna on Saturday, and style on Sunday, my hair will last until the next weekend!

Greetings,

i find that if i spritz (with a conditioner and water mixture) and retwist to "near" the ends when i take them out the next day it looks great. i seem to have the opposite problem though...i do a TnC and throughout the week my hair gets bigger and bigger!

If you are sleeping with a satin bonnet on you may be sweating under it at night which maybe the cause of your frizz. Your head heat is trapped inside of the bonnet which maybe why your curls are less defined as well.

i want to thank you for your post on pantene, it is now one of my favorite leave ins and gives me at least three day hair, which is a great week in my book. i basically put the hair in a ponytail at night and in the morning take a lil more pantene with wethands and glide my hair through (biracialhair.org) and it does a nice job of refreshing along with 100% shea butter, but the front of my hair always tends to be looser. and unfortunately, after the gym, the next day always seems to be a ponytail day, sweat is a biotch..

@akinat: I'm glad you liked the idea! It works for me..the "other" bonnet is crap for me. I wake up w/smooshed curls/twists and I just look plain ridiculous. LOL

I can't sleep in a twist n' curl either. I always have to re-twist.

I too have a problem with sleeping on my twists and waking up with bedhead or flat spots. My hair is not long enough to spread across my pillow, but thanks to a friend of mine I found an additional helpful solution some may like to try: I slept on a travel pillow covered with a satin pillow case and put it side ways between my ear and shoulder and laid down. I then draped my hair over the pillow so that I wasn't laying on it. I woke up this morning with no flat spots!
