It's been almost three weeks since my second henna treatment. I know that several of you are a little skeptical about doing your own henna treatment. First things first, let me just preface this by saying that there is certainly more good than bad that can come from henna-ing.Below, I've listed my experience thus far (both good and bad):
.
Pros
- Minimal shedding: I don't have to clear the drain in my tub any more! I can honestly say I lose about 40-50 hair strands whenever I detangle (usually twice a week), which I can pick with my fingers out of my Denman. Prior to henna, I'd say it was about 100-150.- Stronger hair: My hair doesn't break easily
- Hair strands seem to be thicker, denser: My hair literally feels heavier when its wet.
- The rich black cherry color: Since my hair is already dark, it adds a wonderfully sheer reddish glow.
Cons
- Extremely time consuming: You MUST set aside time to do this right. There are NO real shortcuts.- "Relaxed" curl pattern: I didn't notice this the first time, but with my second treatment, I noticed that my curls had been elongated. If my hair was all the same texture this wouldn't really bother me. However, since my hair is different textures (looser in the front left portion), the relaxing effect didn't sit too well with me (the front-left hung almost straight).
*To remedy this, in my third treatment I plan to use Amla powder, which will help reserve the natural curl pattern.

My mommie does Henna and loves it. your hair always looks beautiful though girl.
hi wes! beautiful pics. let me know how the amla powder works out for you because i'm dying to try henna but scared to death of loosening my curl pattern. like you, i have a portion in the front that is very wavy so i'm sure they would look almost straight after henna! can't wait to get the scoop on your next treatment.
Reading your pros and cons kind of help to alleviate my fears. My only main fear is the color that it will leave. My hair is very fine and I'm afraid that it will look very reddish. When I look at you and Curlynikki's pics after applying the henna, I always see a hint of red...but both of you have really thick hair...so that's really my only concern when it comes to trying the henna. However, I think I'm gonna break pretty soon. :-)
I've done several henna treatments, each time with amla powder in it. I usually mix 1 1/2 boxes of jamila henna and 1/2 a box of hesh amla powder. It is time comsuming, but I just love how thick, healthy and strong my hair feels. When I style my hair I apply products with my head upside down and scrunch up. I then "plunk" my hair (I got this from jessicurl.com) to let if finish air drying.
need bigger hair pics folk
Is there a henna treatment that doesn't involve the reddish hue? Like all black?
Miss Pretty...you can add Indigo powder to your henna for a black hue. That's what I do and I love it!!!
Miss Pretty...you can also do the Cassia instead. It doesn't effect your hair color and it doesn't loosen your curls.
do you know if the Henna and Placenta treatment is any good?
i have just finished doing my hair with hennna and it has turned out amazing. It looks so much more natural than permanent hair dyes and the colour is great. It smells gorgeous and my hair feels and looks so shiny and healthy. I would really recomend henna to anyone who wants to colour their hair but is hesitant about using permanent dyes.
I bought my henna from Lush and I paid £6.28 which I think was really reasonable. The shop assistant was really helpful and told me how i could acchieve differant colours by using different coloured blocks of henna. This the first time I have evr used it and I love it
I henna-ed for the first time last weekend and I completely agree with you. My curl has loosened some (which I like, except in the very front where there was already some heat damage), and there is less shedding. My hair was already chemically colored, but had faded from red to orange. The colored section is now red again while the new growth is kind of tinted. I will definitely do this again!
Thanks guys! I've been looking for something to thicken my hair up!
akinat.....it has nothing to do with hair thickness...CN has fine hair but because of the henna its thicker...it just depends on your current hair color
Anonymous...thanks for the tip..my hair is black so it looks like it will have the same affect color wise as it does on theirs...sweet!!
Thanks for the post! Super helpful!

So, since you are a pro at this... I should just be able to make my appointment right?! lollll
I luv henna! I did my first henna gloss a couple weeks ago and I'm hooked. My shedding was reduced drastically, my strands feel smoother, and my hair is soooo soft yet strengthened. I'm a henna user for life!
Major question? Is it suppose to be green?????? I bought some from an indian grocer store and it was green. I tried getting some at a store with natural herbs and what not, and his was green too. The green scares me.
i'm looking for some amla for the same reason. i only want to thicken my strands, not loosen my curl. gotta find out if i can get this at the indian store too...
cul-ture-queen, yes, it's a green powder. when you mix it, it turns brown after the color releases. if you take a little then wipe it on a white paper, you'll see it's an orangey-reddish-brownish color. don't let the green-ness scare you away! =)
