I deep conditioned using Elasta QP's DPR-11 combined with a tablespoon of coconut oil and THEN went to sleep. In the morning, I rinsed, two strand twisted (didn't use any rollers) with Pantene's Relaxed & Natural conditioner and spritzed the ends using Devacurl's Set it Free.
I sat underneath my bonnet dryer for about 45 minutes and kept the twists in throughout the day (6+ hours). When I took them out, I noticed my hair was incredibly shiny and felt smooth yet I noticed it was flat! I instantly knew adding the coconut oil to my DC was the culprit. Nothing I did would help "poof" it up.
.
Needless to say, I ended up washing the next day using Devachan's Low-Poo and conditioning with the Devacurl One C and re-twisting. For some reason, my hair only needs a very small amount of coconut oil, otherwise it will weigh it down significantly.

The flash from the below pic captures the true henna essence- you can really see the reddish tint. Otherwise, my hair is still essentially dark.

Have you given henna a try yet? What are you waiting for?!

Wow, that is a lot of work! I'm not sure that I have the skill or the patience.
Wow, your hair looks gorgeous . . . I think I may give henna a try!
FIYAH!!!!
Wes it looks beautiful although you said it was weighed down it doesn't look like it. Your curls look better and better every time I see you. Have I tried henna yet? No. What am I waiting for? I'm a relaxer baby so I'd have to wait two weeks after my touch up. I’m 16 weeks post relaxer. I thought about going natural for 2 seconds until I hit the 16th week. I need to get my hair "CONKED" ASAP.

Your hair looks great! Does not look flat at all. I tried henna a couple of times. One time I left it on for 3 hours, the following time I left it on for 5 hours. I mixed it with Amla powder to retain some curl (I have loose "s" curls). I did a DC with conditioner added coconut oil and EVOO and my hair did come out rather flat. It was smooth, less frizzy, but my curls were not bouncy. Maybe I did use too much coconut oil as well. Thanks for the review, will try henna again and next time will use less coconut oil.
I know I know! What am I waiting for?!? Idid my first cassia a week ago and I'm going to do another this weekend. I'm not quite ready for the Henna train... Still scared of staining my hairline and having red hair... We'll see. I'll get courage sooner or later.
Love the results Wes...it does not look flat per the pics...but I know what you mean...when I put Coconut Oil in my hair it also weighs it down a bit.
I'm a newbie in regards to learning about Henna by reading your recent posts about it and a little from Curly Nikki...so what is Cassia? I saw D Alexandra mention it.
Also, can you Henna if you are relaxed?
wow wow wow, amazing!
LOL! Great post Wes! I felt like your question at the end was speaking DIRECTLY to me LOL. Too funny. I'm trying henna in a week or so!

Love the results, but then again Wes, your hair is just super fabulous. I've tried the henna once and I while am not jumping through hoops yet, I have noticed more thickness and the subtle tone of brown running throughout. I love that about it.
The problem I have is that my hair is more dry now, so I've been on double time trying to get my moisture level increased. But, I think you've convinced me to try it again. I will let you know how it turns out.
what kind do you use?
I tried cassia twice and like the results and then recently tried henna w/indigo. Was allergic to indigo so I had to wash it out early. I did a test earlier on the inside of my arm and nothing so I thought it was okay but it wasn't. The indigo didn't hurt my scalp or anything but it did make my hair blacker which I wanted. I think I might stick with cassia.
I keep asking myself the same question everytime I look at your Henna posts and CN's Henna posts... Jay, what are you waiting for!? I am being lazy, and a bit scary! I am going to do it! I am!!!?! But can I buy the Henna from anywhere else besides online? Can I go into an Indian Store for it? Where? BTW your hair looks great, I really liked the first pic of your curls. And the color is very subtle. I love your hair Wes, great post!
I plan on trying henna soon as well - your results look great :o)
Hey Wes,
Looking gorgeous as usual.
I have tried henna twice after reading the numerous blogs and forum threads.
I did my first treatment in February and immediately noticed stronger strands, less shedding, and a vibrant red tint on top of my previously dyed (Naturtint) hair.
So far I love it and plan to do a treatment around the 15th of the month for the next 5 months to see if I notice a big difference.
I followed CN's pictorial both times but the first time I added bhrinraj and olive. Second time I added Honey.
First time I used Dulhan and loved it. Second time I used Jamila and personally didn't like it as much due to staining.
My hair does seem to have more wave in some spots but i have so many different textures and still have the pin spring tight curls as well.
I've posted results in my February, March, and Henna albums on Fotki at http://www.fotki.com/new2naptural.
gorgeous results :)
I'm sitting with henna on my head right now for the first time. I read the NC thread on henna(all 115 pages)and am a CurlyNikki follower so I figured if it can strengthen my hair and reduce shedding, I'm on it. I hope my results are as beautiful as yours Wes! Did you use the same recipe both times or did you tweak it?
as much as i love coconut anything, i have to use coconut oil sparingly when it comes to my hair. if i use too much it makes it dry and hard. i only need the smallest amount.
yes, i finally tried henna and was pleased. it wasn't even that messy, yay! i'm going to get my hands on some amla, then try it again, and leave it on longer. i have to update my fotki to show my results.
