The Sub: Summer Survival Tips

Curly Nikki is back with her tips on how to survive the summer heat and humidity. When you're done here, be sure to visit her site and see what I have to say about surviving the dog days of summer.

Summer Survival

Familiar with the old adage, “a wet sponge doesn't soak up more water?” LOL, probably not, seeing as how I just made it up...but I'm sure you get the point!   It means that properly moisturized (water based conditioner sealed with a butter or oil) hair will not seek out atmospheric moisture to quench it's thirst.   This lesson was quickly learned after my first 2 summers in hot and steamy North Carolina.   It was crazy- I'd leave the house with defined, bouncy hair, but by the time I arrived on campus, my hair was a shrunken, frizzy mess.  There was no gel, butter, or magical cream in the world that could preserve my style...

To combat summer frizz, consider the following:

· Frequent Deep Treatments- I try to deep condition every time I wet my hair.  This keeps my hair saturated and happy! My properly moisturized Twist-n-Curl has been known to stand up to the high dew points and humidity of the South.

· Avoid Drying Stylers and Excessive Heat- Using diffusers to dry in the summer is a big NO-NO, and for me, gels and other potentially drying stylers left me with dull, frizzy hair as well.  Remember, the key here is to stay away from any treatment that could potentially rob you from moisture.  Use Teri's conditioner styling method...you'll be surprised at how effective it is!

· Employ frizz proof styles-Break out the twists, buns, and puffs!

· Know the weather forecast-  Check out The Curl Whisperer's Article on the role that Dew Point plays in our Good/Bad hair days.  Also, check out Naturally Curly's Frizz Forecast.

i'm co-signing on the frequent deep treatments and protective styling. my hair retained so much growth last summer, and these were the only two changes i made to my routine.

one of these days i'm going to try your bun nikki! it's too cute, and that flower sets it off nicely.
