Since about February or March, I have been henna-ing my hair once a month. My last henna process was done the first weekend in May. I love the results that henna gives my hair, however, I've been holding off on my next application. The reason why, you ask?
Well...
I have a small section of hair on the front left side of my hair that is not handling the henna too well. It has literally straightened that section out. Because my hair is different textures all around, the section in the front is the most loosely curled. When it is wet, it hangs down-- it almost looks as if it is relaxed! I have to use my hands to scrunch, scrunch, scrunch in order to get some type of wave going on.
A friend of mine suggested that I don't apply the henna to that section in my next application. I've tried the amla powder already and I don't want to use cassia.
This just might be the answer. I'll keep ya posted!
What would you do?

Hi, just discovered your blog-quickly becoming a fan! lol. I recently did a series of hennas (4) within 2 months and the front sS curls became damn near straight like yours and I developed a frizz issue with the tight corkscrews overall. What was your experience with adding Amla to counteract curl loss? I am seeing new-growth and want to regain the henna color but not lose my curl. -OrganicBloom
wes i would add some amla to your henna mix. while i don't henna, i just do amla treatments i do know of curly girls who add amla to the henna mix to maintain the curl and counteract the loosening effect of henna.
i will say that my amla treatments make my hair thick and give my curls that extra umph! i have to remember to deep condition after the amla treatments because it can be very drying.
my hair looks similiar to yours as far as texture, but slightly thicker and it only goes my my shoulder
hope this helps!
thats why I havent used henna yet b/c I already have sections of my hair that are a bit straight. I used Cassia and it was okay it did help my dry scalp but im not thrilled about it.
Wow! Hi wes! I have the same issue. I do not henna, but the very front of my hair is literally straight...I do not know why, it is so annoy...because it appears as if my hair is thin or i have spots, but it is just the texture, not really a curl pattern, i can literally, straighten it with my hands, i have a twa right now, so i can image how it is gonna be when i get length, I do brahmi powder treatments once a month, i love it! I appears to define the curls. Good luck!
Awe that sucks! I was just getting ready to try another henna treatment/amla but I am already battling loosened sections from the last hennna treatment and from flat ironing. Thanks for the warning.
I have been experiencing the same small section of straight hair in the front. I also henna with Amla and it never crossed my mind that the henna might be the issue. I plan to henna this weekend, perhaps I will skip the front section of my hair a see if that makes a difference.
I have the same problem with henna. It's even worse for me because I notice that all over my hair. I think its the henna and then I straightened a couple times too. I stopped using henna and blow dryers for a while to try and save my hair. I guess like all other damaged hair you just have to grow it out.
Henna doesnt affect my curl pattern but it does leave my hair feeling like a haystack for about a week. Maybe I shouldnt use lemon juice.
The same thing happened to me but to all my hair. The last henna treatment I did was 2 months ago, each time I do it I make sure to use half henna half amla and leave it in for a period of time ranging between 3 hours and 6 hours (depending on how much time I have). I have been rocking my curls for the past two months and the curls are slowly coming back. I love the smoothing effects of henna and I want to try it again, maybe this weekend or next, but when I do I think that I will use 3/4 amla and 1/4 henna and leave for 4 hours--I hope this will work for me, maybe it can work for you too.
Siera J,
Henna is extremely drying to my hair as well, but I do love the results, so I just make sure I do an INTENSE DEEP CONDITIONING TREATMENT afterwards! Do you do that?
Also, the henna powder can be mixed w/ anything acidic, really, even green tea! (I learned this from www.curlynikki.com)
I have tried mixing the powder w/ lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, and green tea, and have found that for my dry hair, green tea works the best b/c it does not dry my hair out too much, but i still get the great results! I also mix a little honey into it right before I apply, and this adds conditioning as well.
Hope to help!

Have you added Amla in your henna? It's suppose to help with not losing your curl.
@ Michelle,
Thanks for the advice, How much green tea do you use and how strong do you make the tea?
I would stop using Henna in that section and apply Amla to it instead to try and revive the curl. The front of my hair has very loose curls and that is what I intend to do if I start to see a difference. However, I am using 220g Cassia and 100g of Henna. So it may not be enough Henna in it for that to happen. I've only done it this way twice. I was using just Cassia initially.
I love cassia! I think you should really think about giving it a try =) I used Karishma henna and added alma powder and didnt notice any curl lose....maybe try switching brands HTH =)
Try doing henna glosses instead and add the amla powder to it. Glosses, you only add 2-3 tbsp of henna to conditioner and whatever other ingredients that you wanna put in. I only do glosses and don't experience any loosening.
Just discovered your blog and I love your posts! I am so glad that you gave that henna tip. I have the same issue with the front of my hair being straighter than my back and middle. I am looking forward to using henna now and achieving optimal results!
Just discovered your blog...via CurlyNikki...and I'm hooked!
