Tuesday's Trouble: A Wig Wearer

Not everyone can do hair... Let's try to help those less fortunate ;-)

Dear HBS,

I have been a follower of your site for some time now and I love the information that is presented. I feel that reading your site and others like it have gifted me with a wealth of knowledge. The problem is, I am transitioning and have not had a relaxer since April 9th of this year.

I have not ever been one that is great with styling hair and I find myself wearing a wig daily. I go to a salon every other week to have my hair washed and deep conditioned, but during that off week, I am stuck wearing wigs. Is it possible to have fabulous hair and not be a great hair stylist? Any information and advice that you can give me is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
A Wig Wearer

Dear Wig Wearer, I’m sort of in the same boat. I’m not the best when it comes to styling my hair but I’ve learned the basics by watching youtube. For the past year I have been constrained to twist outs, braids outs and bantu knot outs (I like the look but it gets boring after awhile). I actually spent an hour trying to cornrow my hair two months ago. Here are some tips that have helped me become better at styling my tresses: 1) don’t give up, 2) practice new styles/techniques on the weekend, and 3) youtube has demos on almost everything natural hair related. If you can’t find something on youtube, ask your fave youtuber to make a video on it.

Curlformers are about as foolproof as you can get when doing your hair. I had the same exact problem so much so that people were offering to do my hair for free. Found curlformers problem solved. Did take a bit of trial and error though. I just got the starter kit.

Hi Wearer!

Of course you can! Wigs and weaves, IMO, are a great option to switch up styles and protect your hair.

The main thing to remember is to choose styles that your hair color, blend with your hair texture (if you'll be leaving any hair out) and don't look "cheap" (regaurdless of the price point or actual price).

I personally am not a fan of lace fronts. The glue/tape can be messy and most "everyday" wearers look like they have on a lace front as opposed to fabulous hair.

When I buy wigs (I can't tell you how many I own/have owned)I usually try styles I wouldn't be able to on my big curly hair and doctor them up. You can cut bangs if you choose, cut length off if you choose and putting hair products (such as a shine serum) help them look more realistic.

Always buy bobby pins to pin the sides (even if there are combs in them) and get a wig brush!

To care for them dipping in a wig shampoo/conditioner and letting them air dry is best.

Have fun! It will take some practice to figure out what you like and to learn to "play" with your styles.

P.S. -

This site as well as a ton of youtube channels have tips and tutorials on natural hair styles.

The easiest, IMO, is a braid or twist out. With or without rollers on the end.

You'll just have to try things to figure out which products work the best in your hair. If you hate it... You can always fall back on your wig! LOL! Or a weave... They last a while and ususally when you don't touch your hair it you retain more length.

Blessings!

Thank you all for the advice....it is really appreciated! Friday I went to the salon and just told my stylist to "cut it!" He did, and I was so shocked! I haven't ever had hair this short, and I must admit I was defintely feeling remorseful. I am trying to make it work, and I know that I am now on my way to healthier and beautiful hair.

Thanks again for your advice, and thanks for posting my question.

Congratulations on your BC. I hope remorse will quickly give way to excitement and curiosity. Enjoy your new hair. Have fun with it!
