I mentioned back in August that I wouldn't be straightening my hair for a very long time, and I meant it. Caring for my natural hair, is a lot of work. If you've got textured tresses than you know the work we must put in. With that said, in an effort to achieve easy, carefree hair I decided to a simple roller set.Steps I followed:
- Washed and deep conditioned hair.
- Used Mizani's Thermastrength Style Serum prior to setting
- After drying hair (underneath a bonnet hair dryer) and removing rollers, I used a small bit of Carol's Daughter Healthy Hair Butter to tame flyaways and maintain sheen.
- Because the initial result yields fluffy and bouncy curls, I clip my hair up into a loose bun at the top of my head (for about 2 hours, or overnight) to help elongate curls (thus creating waves).
- Afterwards, shake, use fingers to define curl pattern (if necessary) and go!

*NOTE: Let me just say I SUCK at roller setting. Because I'm a perfectionist, my sets MUST be nothing less than salon quality when done. I have the professional rollers, the clips, the net PLUS ear covers for when I sit underneath the dryer. Because of all the above, it takes me about an hour to set my hair on rollers. I have to keep a spray bottle nearby because by the time I'm done, my hair is about 95% dry :-(
However, the end results yielded BIG fluffy waves. Usually I'd take my flat iron and go over the roots, but I didn't want flat hair. I love the volume.
Just fyi- I can usually get a good 7 days out of this style (first 3 - 4 days down, remaining 2 or 3 days are ponytail/bun days)
Do you roller set your hair?

if i had the right texture, i would rollerset vs. blowdry and flat iron. my hair shrinks alot when wet so there is nothing much i can do about it. cute hair
I love my salon roller sets, but i hate wearing rollers at home.
My mother did teach me once how to roll my har with a paper bag, and that was the best curl ever!
If I ever remember how to do it I'll post it on my blog.
Natural hair is work, but healthy strands are WORTH IT!!!
Thanks Wes.
Your results are gorgeous! I'm transitioning now, so all I do is roller set & pin curl my hair at night...sleeping on those rollers hurt...my bc may happen soon, just riding the transitioning into thanksgiving. :) Have a good day.
I must be one of the very few Dominicans that don't know how to do a roller set :( I would love to learn how to do it so I can do my own hair as well as my 13 year old's on the weekends. Just like you, I'm concerned that I won't get it perfect and that I will have to keep re-wetting to be able to finish it. Seeing your results I might just give it a try. Thanks for the post.
You are WORKING THIS!!! Reminds me of Bey. This is another thing I want to try with my hair...a roller set. I pray it comes out this nice.
Looking good girl! I love it!
Definitely want to try this and soon!
Wes girl you working that roller set!! I think I will have to practice to get perfection but it's already on the list of oneof my styles to try!
I dont wanna flat iron anymore either, I noticed I have quite a few pieces of my hair that will not revert back to it's old fabulous curl and that pisses me off! lol!
Since I made the decision to transition, rollersets have become my staple style. I set it on the weekend and the style usually lasts a whole week. The only thing I absolutely hate is the time it takes my hair to dry! I'm a big proponent of no heat, but I've gone more than 24 hours with rollers in only to find a few sections that still need a blow dryer. My hair is thick and thirsty!
Wes where do u buy ur roller set.and what kind u use..I need to get some
Your rollerset turned out great. That is something that I am still struggling with. I'm going to try and perfect it this winter.
Thanks guys!
@Zena, my grandmother used roll her hair on the brown bags, I could never figure out how that works.
@Anonymous 7pm: Any ol' beauty supply store sells rollers. Not sure of the brand name but get the grey and purple ones, they're about 2.79 for a pack of 10 (I think).
gorgeous end result!
love the results Wes!! :)
I have all of the above you mentioned at home haha but it also takes me forever to rollerset my h air but I may get back into it to save money :)
I have to get that Mizani thermasmooth product
I really want to get into rollersetting but I don't own a hooded dryer. And sitting around w/ rollers for 24 hrs doesn't appeal to me... Can you guys make any suggestions?
hi wes, do you frequent dominican salons? i tried to do a search but didnt see a post. could you a do a post on this? i would love to hear your thoughts.
What kind of dryer do you use? I'm desperately searching for a soft bonnet dryer that works well. My mom had one back in the day but hers took absolutely forever to dry her hair! I have thick hair and I dont want to spend hours under the dryer :( Any suggestions?
