Airplanes and Turbulence

I'm in Florida right now on a business trip and the weather is HORRIBLE! It is coming down in torrential sheets, thundering, raining and its extremely windy. If I didn't know any better I'd call it a "hurricane". This isn't just your average storm though- I have to get on a plane tomorrow! Keep in mind that I'm not afraid of flying but I'm not exactly that comfortable with it either. One of my biggest fears is flight turbulence and I just spoke to a guy in the lobby of my hotel who came in today from Philly; he said it was the worst flight ever.
Guys, keep my coworkers and I in your prayers!

Are you afraid of turbulence? How do you deal with it?

Girl, flying is one of my WORST fears. And what is really horrible is that I love to travel. I think my uncomfortability was amplified when I had a really terrifying, experience coming back from Paris. It was so bad, people started to proceed in prayer and flight attendants handed out medications to some passengers. After that, I became terrified of flying. Every time I would go on a plane I would break out in cold sweat and clutch my seat for dear life.

Anyway, if it is really bad for you, for next time you can ask your doctor for a mild sedative just to calm your nerves before you travel. Take it a little before you board and you will be passed out the whole flight-only waking up when you land in your destination ;-)

In the meantime, you can try taking dramamine (which makes you drowsy), meditating, music or sleeping. This is a weird trick- but what helps me sometimes is if you are by a window, shut the screen and rest your head against it using a pillow. For some reason, the bumps don't feel as bad when I do that.

I totally feel your pain. But don't worry. You will be fine.

Hope this helps.

Much love and safe journeys.

Same thing happened when I was coming back from Florida in August. I was so scared but didn't want to let my fear show in front of my kids...I will def keep you and your coworkers in my prayers...safe travels.

No worries! My dad is a pilot and I've picked his brain since I can remember about everything possible in regards to flying. Turbulance is just the pressure changing between systems/wind. The plane doesn't actually move even though the people and contents inside of it do (think hitting the bottom of a ketchup bottle when it won't come out). One thing that IS kinda creepy, however, is that there's an 8 foot differential in the position of the wings when flying to east Asia from the states...=P Safe travels for you and your coworkers!

Wes that storm passed through Georgia yesterday. It was awful! Now they are thinking we are getting more rain tomorrow night or Saturday and possible snow flurries.

Normally I am not afraid to fly, BUT the last few flights I took to LA were awful! Turbulance was on 100! I hate the take off and landing the most.

Wishing you and your coworkers a safe return home:)

i get knots in my stomach from turbulence. I start praying "God, please get us there safely".
(repetitively). If not, pls knock me out cold if anything shall happen.lol. really though. I remember the last time I traveled last month a vacation to Jamaica. I thought we were almost there, and as soon as I opened the window to see what I can see which was only water (then came the turbulence) and I got kinda frantic cause i swear it felt like the plane was dropping. Thank God it didnt. Thats a big fear for me too. I pray for you guys safe journey.

I'm not afraid of flying but turbulence is the worst! My aunt who doesn't fly always says "well if it's your time it's your time." Somehow when she says that it's not that comforting but it is true!

I like larger planes because somehow the turbulence doesn't seem as magnified. I once flew on a small plane from NC to NY and it was a nightmare! When you can see almost every dial in the cockpit...that's a problem! I hope your flight turns out okay Wes.

Thanks for all of your prayers and help guys- Glad to see I'm not alone! The storm passed and we got back to Ny safely (and in lovely weather... whew!). I once flew from Kingston to Montego Bay in Jamaica and that wast the WORST flight I've ever experienced. It was only a 20 minute flight but I felt every bump in those blue mountain winds.

I know this thread is old but I just came back from Florida on a flight from hell. My job involves me to travel and for the first 1.5 years, I was fine. It was one flight where the turbulence was so bad, I had developed PTSD from it.
