Entry #3
After about two months of transitioning I decided to get my hair braided because it was the summer time and the two textures of my hair were so drastically different. I loved having braids because it was so easy to maintain! In between letting my hair rest from the braids I TRIED to do twist outs but…I always ended up wearing a hat. I love Herbal Essences Hello Hydration. No, love isn’t strong enough. I LIVE FOR Hello Hydration and my Cantu Shea Butter Leave In Conditioning Repair Cream. They do things to my hair, wonderful, delicious things, that I never thought would happen. They give me curls! What, that’s not a big deal?
Let me tell you for a girl who got her first perm at 9 and before that lived for the days her mom would hot comb her hair, THIS IS HUGE! I never ever thought my hair could curl (without the aid of some Fabu-laxer and a curling iron.) I even have curls that go boing! I was so fascinated with my hair growth that I cut off the ends and just stood in the mirror admiring my one curl. I have gotten kind of scissor happy, though. Sometimes I take out braids just to cut off the ends and imagine what my whole head will look like. Why don’t I just cut it all off? Well, I haven’t found a new hairdresser yet and I’m not gonna do it myself. Would you take out your own kidney or do your own root canal? And also I’m afraid of having short hair. What if I can’t rock it? What if I hate it? Anybody feel where I’m coming from or is this just the ranting of a crazy chick?
Ok, I have to go finish taking out these braids. It's the last time I'm putting in braids, I'm gonna take the time until my BIG CHOP (February 27; my birthday!) to learn how to do my hair. And next time: How my verrrrrrry conservative family is handling me being natural!
Have YOU done the big chop? (Any and all advice is welcome!)

Hi Melinda,
Hang in there. You'll know when it's the right time to cut off the relaxed ends. I did the BC and cut it myself and loved it! When I started transitioning I didn't give myself a set time or deadline to BC I just told myself that I'd know when I was ready to say goodbye. Those relaxed scraggly ends were driving me crazy after 5 months and I couldn't wait to see my natural curls and kinks. I cut it myself because I trust myself better than anyone else with my hair and I've been going to the salon for years. My plan was to cut on Saturday and if I needed assistance then I'd go to my natural hair stylist on Monday to clean it up. On Monday I went to have her clean it up and she was impressed and only spent 5 minutes getting rid of a few straight ends. You made a smart choice with the braids and know that when you decide to cut it the learning process will continue but hopefully a loving relationship with your hair will too!
this is beautiful! i recently decided to go natural after contemplating the decision for months. similar to you (i've read all 3 parts) i got a relaxer early (at 11) and noticed that my hair wasn't really growing/making progress). i'm really nervous and i have many of the same questions you have about rocking short hair, what is it going to look like, etc. but this is beautiful! keep it up & hang in there - you're not in this alone :)
