Friday's Dessert 2/26/10

I just finished reading the MOST disturbing book I think I've ever read. "A Deep Dark Secret", by Kimberla Lawson Roby is the fictional account of a 12 year old girl, Jillian, who is dealing with frequent sexual abuse at the hands of her stepfather. Since age 7, she has kept this deep dark secret from everyone she knows.

At times, I found myself skipping over several pages and paragraphs (which is probably why I read the entire book within 24 hours!). I would put this book in the same category as "PUSH" by Sapphire (aka the movie "Precious"). A tough read indeed, but once I start a book I HAVE to finish it.

One of the quotes from the story that stuck with me after shutting off my Nook was this:

"For everything bad that happens, something good always comes out of it."

No matter what kind of situation you may be going through, ALWAYS try to see the silver lining in it... No matter what.

Have a great weekend and if you're snowed in like I am, enjoy it!

I haven't been liking Kimberla Lawson Roby's books. I saw the one you listed and decided against getting it, from reading your review I'm glad that I did.

I can't finish a book I don't really like. Thanks for the review. I did read PUSH with my bookclub and saw the movie. I liked how the main character kept "pushing" on through all of her trials and hardships.

Love the quote, it's so true. Everything happens for a reason!

I liked Kimberla Lawson Roby's preacher series and One in a Million (I can't really remember the titles of all the books) but I don't think I can stomach reading this one. I have read PUSH years ago when I was probably too young to fully comprehend what the book was all about and from then on I cannot bring myself to read another book like it.

Right! And I swore to myself that I wasn't gonna read it either (after reading the review in Essence). BUT, I realized this is real life for some and after paying $13 I said oh well, I'm just gonna have to bite the bullet on this one.

I recently read that book also because my mother sent it to me thinking it was about something else (she didnt read the excerpt) and I was not a fan it was seriously disturbing.

I read "Push" last year and had to finish reading it even though it was very disturbing. I don't think I could go through reading something like that again.

Thanks for the quote. It's very true, although it usually takes some time after "the bad" to recognize and appreciate "the good" sometimes.

This audio book has been sitting on my desk at work for a week untouched. I literally just put a disk in the computer and decided to open google reader while I waited for itunes to open (my comp is old and slow) and here I see your book review. I am still going to listen to the book. Sad, but this is a true story for far too many women/girls out there.
