I finally got my hands on it: Mizani's True Texture line for naturals. In total, there are 5 products in the line: a sulfate-free shampoo, moisturizing mask, conditioning curl wash, defining cream gel and a curl extending cream.
Below, I've listed the first five ingredients* for each of the three products I used. (*all ingredient definitions are courtesy of the "Ingredients Dictionary" at www.tightlycurly.com)
Here's what I used:
Curl Balance Moisturizing Sulfate-free Shampoo
First 5:
- Water
- Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate: (Okay) Mild cleanser
- Laureth-5 Carboxylic Acid: (I couldn't find this one)
- Cocamidopropyl Betaine: (Okay) Gentle cleanser that may be too mild to wash away any styling products by itself. Very often the main cleansing ingredient in baby shampoos. Also used as a mild foamer.
- Sodium Chloride: (Caution) aka "table salt", a corrosive in anything left in the hair. Used as a stabilizer, thickener, and cheap Ph adjuster. If near the bottom of an ingredients list, it should be fine.
My experience: Hmm, interesting ingredient list. Any-who, I didn't get a good lather until the third wash but my hair did feel extremely soft and supple. Even though the first two washes didn't lather up good, I still felt like my hair was clean. The tangles were melting away through my fingers and my hair felt like it was actually getting moisturized while being cleaned at the same time. I don't usually get those two feelings at the same time.
Curl Replenish Intense Moisturizing Mask
First 5:
- Water
- Cetearyl Alcohol: (Good) Used as an emollient, emulsifier, conditioner and thickener.
- Amodimethicone: (Caution) Used for conditioning, and makes it easier for a comb to glide through hair. A lighter type of silicone that has been known to be irritating to the skin.
- Behentrimonium Chloride: (Okay) Used for detangling and as an anti-static ingredient and emulsifier.
- Cetyl Esters: (Okay) A synthetic wax used to replace spermaceti (wax that once came from sperm whales). Used as an emollient, thickener, keeps products from separating, and makes them more opaque.
My Experience:
I liked this a WHOLE lot. Both the shampoo and conditioner have a great creamy custard-ish like fragrance (which automatically makes me feel good!). The conditioner also resembles vanilla pudding in texture. I loved it, my denman brush ran through my hair like butter
After washing and conditioning...
Perfect Curl Defining Cream Gel
First 5:
- Water
- Dimethicone: (Good) This is the name for a group of silicones. The heaviest of all silicones used for hair care, they provide the most smoothing effect, but is the hardest to wash out. Conditions by preventing water loss. Also used to keep product from foaming.
- Glycerin: (Good) Used as a humectant, and also to add slip in a conditioner to make the product easier for combing.
- Sorbitol: (Good) Functions much like glycerin by adding slip to a product, as well as being a humectant and a thickener.
- Paraffinum Liquidum: (Okay) aka Mineral Oil, "one of the most benign of all cosmetic ingredients", a good conditioning ingredient, providing slip so the comb glides through hair more easily. This ingredient has gotten an undeserved reputation for being harmful.
My experience:
Keep in mind that I'm one of those naturals who love silicones. I've tried products without them and realized that my hair needs them. As long as I indulge in a good clarifying wash once a month, I'm good to go. I don't like mineral oil though, although seemingly harmless, I often feel like it's just a cheap filler. But nevertheless, as I'm typing this my hair is still drying so I'll be able to give you the full final results tomorrow. However, the cream-gel did glide on very easily, for those of you who may be familiar, the texture kind of reminded me of the Wave Nouveau Moisturizing Lotion, but not as greasy.
What I ultimately think...
Not bad all in all, I'm already a huge fan of the shampoo and conditioning mask, not too sure about this cream gel though. The ingredients list doesn't bother ME that much, but I know that there are a lot of naturals who will not agree with it.
What's YOUR take?

yay! Thanks for posting this Wes! It sounds nice! Your hair looks beautiful after the cleansing...I am glad you had great results! And Thank you for the ingredient list!
I would love to see your hair today!!!
Thanks for teh review I love Mizanit but I've been waiting on the reviews before i invested in the new line. I am definitely getting the mask. Have you tried the Mizani H2O cream?? Thanks again, D
I am so glad that someone posted the link to this on Naturally Curly. I have been debating about trying it and this just sold me. My hair also loves (or at least soesn't hate) cones, and I am not worried about the mineral oil so much. I guess if I were to use the product every day, then it might become a problem later. i think this is work a try. Thanks for the review.
Had no idea this line existed - thanks for the review! I learn something from each one of your posts!
Thanks for the review I've been wanting to try out their line for a while now.
doesn't sound too bas, just wondering where did you buy the products from?
@DramaBrainiac, I received the set courtesy of Mizani
I have the curl extending cream and i liked it a lot after the first use so i went to get the conditioning curl wash today and i'm gonna use it in the morning. I can't wait to shampoo and conditioner. My plan is to stick with this line. I think it's pretty good. And I don't care about ingredients..it's whatever works, works
I think the point of these new low-lather, no-lather shampoos and cleansing creams is to cleanse without harmful lathering detergents. If we can re-think our need for suds (use a gentle clarifying shampoo once a week or every other week when you need to remove build-up, Carol's Daughter has a really nice one) our hair will thank us for it.
Nice review! I use this line also and love the Cleansing Rinse, which is a low lather conditioning cleanser that can be used every day. I use this every day and then use the shampoo on the 7th. I just used the Moisturizing mask today for the first time and it was nice. Left my hair soft and kept my curls from looking dry.
OK, I just stumbled upon your blog and … it’s fantastic!! When I grow up, I wanna have a blog just like yours. :-) I’m still a novice, but I have a little beauty blog -- not quite as sophisticated as yours and catering more to the neurotically compulsive beauty-hoarder – I’d be honored if you would take a look at. If you like it, I’d love to post a link to your blog on my site, for my readers who might be seeking more specialized information. Let me know. Thanks a bunch!
Sincerely,
Jennifer Shelton

It's a shame that some people don't care about the ingredients, only results. When in actuality, the prolonged usage of products with silicones and other synthetics will cause permanent damage to your cuticles and overall health of your hair. I hear mostly newly naturals stick to this ideal and don't realize the damage being done until its too late. Time will tell as it always does. Cancer, cancer, Cancer!
that was a bit much referencing "cancer" don't be so critical unless you have facts and even then, to each her own. It's said that the over usage of the microwave is unhealth too...so have you stopped using it as well?
A friend of mine just asked me about this line and I honestly wasn't too thrilled about trying it, but your review has me thinking twice about it. I might have to give it a shot.
I wondered about this too. I broke down and got the leave-in detangler spray, but was VERY disappointed. It doesn't do a dang thing for my hair...perfect waste of my money. Anyone ever use their straightening cream? I sometimes do the hot comb in the fall/winter and was wondering about this, but not enough to buy it to try it.
I'm so surprised to see good results from these products. They actually made my hair 'fro more! As soon as I washed and conditioned I could already see there was no curl definition happening. Used the perfect curl, and got a perfect mess! I just couldn't waste my $$ on the moisture stretch. Well, that was a forty some-odd dollar experiment...down the drain!
To be fair: While the result were horrendous, I do have to say, the detangling was quite a pleasant surprise. No issues during combout (although I could see the frizz materializing before my very eyes--but it was DETANGLED frizz...sighhh)
