So... I used henna for the first time today. I followed curly nikki's tutorial. I used a foil bag of Rajasthani henna at a local Indian grocer. I have transitioning 4a shoulder length hair, about half n half. I would recommend using the entire bag 200g if anyone else is rockin this much of a cotton ball. Needless to say the application process proved difficult to spread the mix. So far the results are nice even before washout. The curl pattern looks nice. P.S gloves are a must!

Thanks so much for the info Wes! It couldn't have come at a better time as my sister left for NYC the day after this post. She was able to get me some of the Jamila henna from 28th st. It was sooo much cheaper than online. Thanks again!

FIRST Henna on Saturday! I really like it. I live in the (deep) South and the humidity wrecks my hair. Products have disappointed me so many times, that I adopted a more natural routine of weekly twistouts with unrefined shea butter and aloe vera gel. My hair is as soft today (Wednesday) as it was on Monday despite several outdoor workouts near lakes and severe early morning fog.

@ SA: I slept with a clear plastic cap on my head, then covered w/ a terry cloth turban (I got it from the beauty supply store for about $2). Then, just to be extra careful, I placed a towel over my pillow. Nothing came out- My towel was just as clean as when I laid down on it!

@ SFergie: I used Herbal Essences Hello Hydration for my co-wash, and for my deep condition I used Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose along w/ Elasta QP's DPR-11 (50/50)

WOW, your looks great!!! I actually did my 1st Henna (Cassia/Neutral) on Saturday also. I'm not ready for the color just yet. But I did enjoy the results, however, I had the hardest time rinsing all of the grit out. I co washed and rinsed about 3 times. I also did the deep condition. There was definitely shine, less shrinkage(my main concern) and less frizz. It even seems stronger already.I mixed mine with boiling water, EVOO and honey (Nikki's recipe for Cassia).
I am definitely doing it again this weekend.

This makes me want to try henna all the more. You hair looks beautiful. Quick question-you said that it wasn't that messy for you. What about while you were sleeping? Did it stain pillows/sheets, etc.? And yes, I know you probably put on a plastic cap/bag while sleeping, but some could have slip out. Did it? And how did it dry? Hard like bentonite clay, or still somewhat wet/damp?

@ FlowerChild: There are a DOZEN indian shops on Lexington near 28th, I don't know the name of the one I went into, but most of them in that area should have it. Kalustyan's is also good too (on Lexington btwn 28th and 29th)

Oh YAY! I'm still going back and forth over henna-ing. I don't know why I'm being all scared... I guess I'm afraid of getting more color than I want (I love my dark hair!). But I guess there are ways around that... so I need to stop being a scaredy cat and just go for it.

I saw you yesterday in the misty grim weather and was surprised you didn't have your hood on...lol But yes I’d like to tell you again your hair look WONDERFUL and bigger then usual (clap your hands for the big haired girls. I'm glad you decided to do it. Now I feel like trying it out. Like you, I am concerned with the henna changing my hair color. Unlike you, I dyed my hair a couple of years ago to a color that matched my natural hair to get rid of an older dye job and fear that the henna might make the ends red. But I would love to give henna a try so I can and end up with shiny, big hair have less frizz.

Go head and get your henna on, lol. Very nice shine. I'm a henna head and I henna'd on Friday too. I usually use CN's instructions word for word but this time I used 100g of henna and 50g of amla. I'm addicted. I've been on the henna train since January and I have no plans of hopping off.
